Shadow Boxing
Wed 22nd September 2010

by James Gaddas

Shadow Boxing presents a struggle for dignity and respect. It pulls no punches in its depiction of a boxer facing his toughest opponents yet, his personal demons.

The son of a boxer who couldn't win, Flynn is determined not to end up like his father. He becomes a successful fighter through utter dedication. But is his gruelling training a way of avoiding aspects of himself he'd rather not face? A crisis builds as he moves closer to a title fight, and the play rushes to a shattering conclusion.

An emotionally intense and highly physical performance from Jonny Collis-Scurll, labelled ‘one to watch' by The Stage for his performance in Weepie during last year's Fringe.

Blood Brothers Book Now
Blood Brothers
Wed 22nd September 2010

by Willy Russell

Fast-moving and perceptive, entertaining and thought-provoking, funny yet ultimately tragic, the play tells the captivating tale of twin boys separated at birth only to be reunited by a twist of fate and a mother's haunting secret.

Spanning the post-war years of the late ‘50s to the class divides of Thatcher’s ‘80s, Blood Brothers looks at the differences and conflicts of the boys' upbringings in Liverpool. A powerful story of childhood, adolescence, parenthood and superstition.

The play which became the hit West End musical is shockingly relevant again as the country faces the prospect of savage cuts in spending and services and the spectre of mass unemployment looms once more.

By the internationally celebrated author of Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine.

The Dumb Waiter
Thu 23rd September 2010

by Harold Pinter

In a seedy basement below a café, two assassins await instructions for their next assignment. Primed and ready, they don’t know when the call will come, or who their next victim will be. One thing’s for sure: they weren’t expecting an order for steak and chips!

Classic Pinter – spare, claustrophobic, simultaneously menacing, hilarious.
With echoes of current world events, the play raises questions about power, politics, class, friendship and, ultimately, betrayal.
Pinter’s unique style in this early gem of a play pre-figures Quentin Tarantino’s gangster movies by many years… A masterpiece by the sadly-missed Nobel Prize winning playwright.

Busted in 1988 by the American Drug Enforcement Agency and sentenced to twenty-five years at America's toughest federal penitentiary; Terre Haute, Indiana. He was released on parole in 1995 after serving seven years.

In 1996 he released his autobiography, Mr. Nice, which remains an international best seller in several languages and was the best selling non-fiction book of 1997. On the subject of his book, he says: "Through a plethora of media interviews and several public book readings, it became clear that the predominant reason why so many adolescents and university students read and enjoyed Mr Nice was their frustration with the law prohibiting cannabis consumption and trade. Until then, I had no idea of the extraordinary extent of cannabis use by young people today."

Famous for his audacious cannabis trafficking and liberal opinions, Howard Marks has become somewhat of an icon in the world of literature and spoken word. Following the worldwide sucess of his autobiography 'Mr Nice' and with the imminent release of Bernard Rose's film the same title, Howard is to now taking his lauded "An Audience with Mr. Nice" on tour to share his experiences face to face with the public.

The Madness of George III Book Now
The Madness of George III
Wilde Enterprises in association with South Hill Park, Eastbourne Theatres and Anvil Arts
Fri 29th - Sat 30th October 2010

The year is 1788. George III is King. King of England. He has a loving wife, a nation of subjects, a loyal parliament, and the world kneels at his feet....
But he’s a little odd.

The king’s behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic, and word has it he’s addressed an oak tree as the King of Prussia! Doctors are called in, parliament falters, and the Prince Regent manoeuvres himself into power.

From the hand of national treasure Alan Bennett, author of The History Boys and Talking Heads, The Madness of George III is a brilliant exploration of duty and kingship, an epic play about the ties that bind us together as family, as a society and as a nation. Gripping drama, dangerous politics and irreverent comedy collide in a rollercoaster ride where the health of the nation is at the mercy of the mental health of one man.

Starring Simon Ward (Judge John Deed, Zulu Dawn, Young Winston, All Creatures Great And Small) and Susan Penhaligon (The Land That Time Forgot, No Sex Please We’re British, Bouquet of Barbed Wire), this marks the first touring production of the play since the original award-winning production by the National Theatre in 1991 and the subsequent hit 1994 film starring Nigel Hawthorne.

Red Square Book Now
Red Square
Wed 1st December 2010

Red Square is the solo improvisation project of University Lecturer and Performer James McNicholas. The name for the project was selected entirely at random and such is the great spirit of improvisation! Every performance is entirely improvised in the moment of live performance and is accompanied by live improvised music. It may or may not be humerous, it may or may not be surreal and it may or may not be what you expected. The performances will broadly relate to the idea of a 'theatre of dark beauty'; a theatre style and philosophy being developed by McNicholas in both his creative and academic work. Dark beauty is feminine, receptive and meditative, which draws the audience in by way of creating a minimalist atmosphere. This does not create a rule by which the improvisation must follow, but does however act as an open stimulus for the performances in terms of its intended aesthetic.

Bully
Theatre Tours International Presents
Wed 8th December 2010

A taste for malice haunts the males of his bloodline vampirically passing from grandfather to father to first born son with the exactitude of clockwork but, as the timid younger brother, spanning his life from tragic childhood to tainted adulthood, Fry charts the inner afflictions of a well meaning soul who trys to break the cycle by becoming a sufferer... rather than the bully.

With no resources other than his own sharp tongue to convey a deeply moving and edifying study of the human condition, this sincere, eloquent rendering of a timeless theme is reminiscent of Greek tragedy in all its sturdiness and spoken in dextrous verse. You will admire its art, its wit and verbal dexterity, and thrill at the frequently vulgar, slang-addled story.

A sell out sensation at the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe, Bully is a mesmerising experience and a most exemplary and powerful monologue.
Written and performed by Richard Fry.
